Gas Prices Look Very Different When You Adjust for Inflation
- Measuring Nominal vs. Inflation-Adjusted Gasoline Prices: This chart compares the nominal price of gasoline to its inflation-adjusted price since 1991.
- A Look at the Data: As of June, 2026, gasoline prices stood at $4.05/gallon. However, if you inflation-adjust those prices since 1991, the number is far lower, at $1.81/gallon.
- Investment Implications: Gas hasn’t gotten that much more expensive. The dollar has just gotten a lot weaker. When you hold purchasing power constant, the real price of gas is far lower than the sticker price at the pump suggests.
